Brief History of Sacramento

Founded by John Sutter in 1848, Sacramento is the capital of the state of California. In 1839, John Sutter built a place called Sutter's Fort, which was an agricultural and trading colony in California. The actual city of Sacramento developed from Sutter's Fort. During the famous gold rush, Sacramento became a major center for agriculture and commercial business as well as a terminus for stagecoaches, wagon trains, the Pony Express and the First Transcontinental Railroad. Today, Sacramento is often called Sacto, Sactown, Sacratomato and Sac by locals. It also has the nickname "River City".
