Brief History of Sacramento
Founded by John Sutter in 1848, Sacramento is the capital of the state of California. In
1839, John Sutter built a place called Sutter's Fort, which was an agricultural and trading
colony in California. The actual city of Sacramento developed from Sutter's Fort. During
the famous gold rush, Sacramento became a major center for agriculture and commercial
business as well as a terminus for stagecoaches, wagon trains, the Pony Express and the
First Transcontinental Railroad. Today, Sacramento is often called Sacto, Sactown,
Sacratomato and Sac by locals. It also has the nickname "River City".

Sacramento residents enjoy a mild climate with dry summers. The city sits at the
confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers and has a deepwater port that's
connected to the San Francisco Bay. The city's population is estimated at around
418,000.
As a national historic landmark for Dixieland jazz, the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee is held
each Memorial Day weekend. There's also the popular Sacramento French Film Festival,
which is held each July. Sacramento has two professional basketball teams and a minor
league baseball team.

lovely cobbled streets and tour preserved or restored buildings, some dating as far back
as the 1860s. Old Sacramento features rides on steam-hauled trains and paddle
steamers.
For a more modern scene, the Esquire IMAX Theatre of Sacramento provides great
entertainment for both couples and families. Or, couples can take a cruise on the
Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry between the historic ports of San Francisco and Sacramento.
